if you're in to cooking and you can't see, how do you find little pieces of eggshell in the bowl after the egg has been cracked? I ran in to this problem this morning while making a cake. thanks for any responses that may come of this.
and, sticking one's fingers in the bowl seems a little messy. Any other ideas?
I'd simply try to ask someone with sight to do a quick once-over of the bowl's contents. Beyond that, how are you cracking the eggs?
yeah. you should be able to crack an egg effectivly without ending up with eggshell shrattnel in the bowl. the trick is to hit the egg on the rim of the bowl, holding it perpendicular to the edge. If you do it quickly and with force, it should crack without shattering. then just hold it over the bowl and gently pull the two halves of the shell apart. if you have issues with cracking eggs, crack all your egs in a seperet bowl and if you have to actually feel for the egg shells, then do that. I rarely get shell bits in my egg bowl but if I do, I just look for it.
Best thing to do, is to crack the eggs in a separate bowl, and check for shell with your fingers. Egg shell in cake, is just yucky.
In case yall missed it ...
She said ... without putting your fingers in the bowl.
I believe that means, that she wants to do it without sticking her fingers, in the bowl whether it be the cake bowl, or a separate one!
Now, as for her question...
It was said, that you shouldn't get egg in the bowl, and while, if practiced enough, this is true, it's not always that easy.
So, what you might try, is cracking the eggs in a separate bowl, and then using a spoon or fork, preferably metal, to gently stir the eggs, sifting through them gently. Since eggshell is hard, if there is any eggshell in the bowl, it will make a noise, if touched by the spoon. While this isn't a foolproof way to accomplish your task, it's the only idea I can think of, without using your fingers. if I find another, I will share.
may you always find shade and water,

I know... what she said...
Guys, only thing for it, go on, dive dive dive dive dive in there with the fingers! Only way you can check for bits of shell floating around in there if there're no sighties present, then either have a finger bowl standing by to wash your hands or just whizz over to the sink and dip them to rinse the egg off.
Jen.
I would crack the egg by tapping it lightly on the counter, just enough to break the shell. Then hold it over the bowla nd press in and up with your thumbs and pull the shell slowly apart.
i don't think I've ever got a shell in my eggs this way.
So far I've always just crack it on the side of the pan and ate scrambled eggs with out shell.
thanks, everyone.
I usually use my fingrs for most things.
If you're really desperate not to stick your fingers in, try cracking your eggs into a sieve placed over the bowl. If it's a wide enough mesh, you'll be able to leg the white drip through. Then, i'm afraid it's fingers or a spoon to move the yolk into the bowl, but at least you're not fishing around with fingers in the bowl. I don't know if this will work, but give it a go.

What harm can a yucky raw egg do to your precious fingers? Just fucking stick your fingers in there and feel around if necessary, after washing of course.
I know what she said. Thank you very much. I don't give a damn. That is ridiculous, having a sighted person check for you. You want to be called independent, but you would have a sighted person check your eggs for shell for you? Here's a surprise, most sighted people use their fingers. Egg wites and yokes are opaque and so they fish in there. So, wash your hands well, and go get the bits, if there are any. You shouldn't be just tossing eggs strait into your mixing bowl anyway, as beating the egg yokes seperately makes for better batter, even if you have an electric mixer. And, if you need to seperate the egg yokes, then you will have to touch the egg mixture anyway. Honestly, sometimes reading things on the zone makes me want to smash my head against a brick wall.
the different between a chef and a home economist is this. chefs realize that cooking is a multisensory experience. sighted ones have been known to put their hands in stuff. home ec teachers are scientists who are set on appearance. they are worried that our hands might be dirty. get a grip ladies.
amen 15 and 16! Especially 15... lol Yeah one quick crack mostly will yield no eggshells. I've heard people crack eggs with shy taps and always cringe. haha But yeah I do the finger thing too. I'm obsessive about washing my hands so I see no problem with that.
